From the very beginning, man has desired wisdom. The devil played on this desire to tempt man into sin. He approached Eve and asked about God’s ruling concerning the trees of the garden. Because the desire for wisdom was so strong, Eve succumb to temptation and thus man fell into sin.
Now, you may wonder if you can, or even if you should be wise in the eyes of God. The answer is an absolute yes. In fact, Jesus Himself gave to us the two-step process on becoming wise in the eyes of God. He taught, “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. Matthew 7:24-25
Hearing the Words of Christ.
The first step toward wisdom is to hear the words of Christ. This hearing is not a mere acknowledgement of sound, but a careful listening to His teachings. Jesus said, “Let these words sink down into your ears…” Luke 9:44. He also said, “Therefore take heed how you hear...” Luke 8:18.
The words of Christ are more important to you than any other words you will ever hear. His words far exceed even those of a doctor giving you lifesaving counsel. This is true, because it is the words of Christ that will judge us in the last day (John 12:48)
Obeying the Words of Christ.
Hearing the words of Christ is only step one. Without performing step two, you would still remain in a foolish state before God. Jesus Himself declared this. He said, “But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.” Matthew 7:26-27
The foolish man also heard the words of Christ. His mistake was stopping there. Hearing without doing is worthless. It would be like ignoring your doctor’s lifesaving counsel. However, this is far worse. To hear without doing is to ignore Christ’s soul saving commands and to forfeit your own soul.
Therefore, not only can you be wise in the eyes of God, but this is also God’s expectation for you. He longs for you to hear His words and put them into practice so that one day He may say to you, “Well done thou good and faithful servant. Enter the joy of your Lord.”
God Bless each of you,
Eric Hicks
