For example, when we are listening to the doctor who is giving detailed inst
ructions on what we must do to overcome a disease, we listen attentively. If we are under a tornado warning, we will listen closely to the meteorologist to ensure our safety and the safety of our family.
However, the most important message that we must hear is what we hav
e received from God. The Hebrew writer said, “God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds;” Hebrews 1:1-2.
When Jesus was transfigured upon the mountain, Peter thought it would be good to build three tabernacles. One for Moses, one for Elijiah, and one for Jesus. To that God responded, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!” (Matthew 17:5)
We listen to Jesus for a variety of reasons. One because He is the one who has the words of life. Peter made this acknowledgement when many of Jesus’ disciples turned away from Him. Jesus asked if His disciples would also like to go away. To that Peter said, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Also we have come to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” (John 6:68-69)
Second, we listen to Christ because He alone has the commandments that we must follow to be right with God. Jesus said, “But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?” (Luke 6:46) In the Sermon of the Mount, Jesus made it clear that the wise man was the one who heard the sayings of Jesus and put them into practice. Therefore, if we are to stand firm in the day of Judgment and enter in through heaven’s gate, then we must hear the words of Jesus and practice the His teachings.
Finally, we must listen to the words of Jesus because it is His words that will judge us in the final day. Jesus said, “He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him – the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day.” John 12:48
When we listen attentively to the words of Jesus and put them into our daily practice, then we have great confidence of our salvation, our walk with God, and our eternal future.
God Bless each of you,
