The land of
Egypt was once a place of refuge. There was a significant famine in the land.
God had sent Joseph ahead to prepare a way for His people to survive this great
disaster. For a while, everything was good.
After the death
of Joseph, another king arose to power that did not know Joseph (Exodus 1:8).
He became fearful of the Jews and made them work with rigor. All male babies
were thrown into the river. The people of God cried out to Him and He responded
by sending them a deliverer.
When Moses was
born, his parents Amram and Jochebed hid him. When he could no longer be
hidden, they put him in a basket that would float in the Nile. Pharoh’s
daughter found the Hebrew child and named him Moses for she drew him out of the
water (Exodus 2:10). She found Moses’ mother and paid her wages to nurse the
child until he was weaned.
While this
story is very familiar to us, we learn from this a great lesson about the power
and providence of our Almighty God. The Pharoah of the land tried to keep God’s
people under his control. However, God’s plans will never be hindered by the
schemes of mortal men.
What God did
was nothing short of amazing. Not only did God protect Moses at his birth, but
He also used His providence for Moses’ mother to be compensated for nursing her
own child.
The lesson we
take away from this is that nothing stops the plans of God. We see this
continually throughout Scripture. Jesus Himself said, “…on this rock I will
build My church and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.” (Matthew
16:18) Not man, angels, demons, or even death itself can stand in the way of
God’s plans! Anyone who has dared to withstand God has only played the part of
the fool.
Under the Old
Testament, God delivered His people for Egyptian oppression. In Christ, we have
been set free from the condemnation of sin. Nothing stops our God from
succeeding at what He sets out to accomplish.
Think about the
church today. There are many forces that want to silent us, put us in a corner,
and make us feel inferior. Therefore, we must always remember how powerful our
great God is. When we think of the great accomplishment Jesus made on the
cross, we see His great love and purpose for man today.
Paul said of
God, “who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the
truth.” (2 Timothy 2:4). There is no one who can stop the church for the hand
of God is with us! Let us remember all the great power God displayed in both
the old and new testaments. Let us never shrink back from conflict, but always
march forward. Our God is always with us.
God Bless each
of you,
Eric Hicks
