Letting Your Light Shine

The goal of Christianity is to be like Jesus. Not only do we wear the name of Christ, but we desire our words and actions to reflect Jesus before others. Jesus taught, “You are the light of the world, a city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16)

We have a strong desire to let our light shine before men so that our heavenly Father may be glorified. The question is, what are some ways to let our light so shine before men? Fortunately, there is no shortage of ways we can accomplish this.

First, we can seek to do good things for others. Jesus did this during His life on earth. Luke records, “…who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.” (Acts 10:38b). Throughout His life, Jesus was in the company of those who were in need both spiritually and physically. He was consistent in identifying their needs and meeting them.

Likewise, we will have numerous opportunities to do good for others. It could be simple such as lending a listening ear to someone. We may visit them when they are ill or encourage them when they are feeling down. Whatever form it takes, we too can go about doing good for others.

Another action we can take is in sharing the gospel with others. Paul wrote, “For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” (2 Corinthians 4:6)

We have had the light of the gospel shone upon our hearts. We were obedient to the gospel and have reaped spiritual blessings as a result (Eph 1:3). Likewise, we can shine the light of the gospel upon others.

Sometimes this is a simple as answering a bible question. We all have friends and family members who know that we are Christians and that we study the bible. When they have a question about what the bible says on a particular subject, they will often come to us. It may not seem like much on the surface, but the answer to one bible question can lead to a regular bible study.

Today, as we go about doing good for others and sharing with others the good news of the kingdom, we are letting our light shine before them. Above all, God is then glorified.

God Bless each of you,

Eric Hicks
