The Need for a Standard

A standard is needed in virtually every aspect of life. One example is traffic. There is a standard telling us which lane to drive in. A standard defining what we do when the light turns red and when the light turns green. We could only imagine what traffic conditions would be like if everyone were able to choose to drive in a manner that best suited them. It would be chaotic at best.

In matters of religion, we likewise find the need for a standard to live by. Our standard is the word of God. Without it, we would be left to guess as to how to please God. Fortunately, our God has not left us to guess, but has provided clear instructions as to how we please Him.

Paul stated, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete for every good work.” (2Ti 3:16-17)

Everything we do in the Christian life is based upon God’s standard. When we all live by that same standard we have peace, harmony, and unity with one another. This is as the good Lord intended. His word states, “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!” (Ps 133:1).

Think of all the division over religious matters that is in the world today. There are a variety of teachings about salvation, worship, and daily Christian living. On the surface, all of this can seem like a hazy fog which is difficult to navigate through. However, when we look back to the word of God, all becomes clear.  David wrote, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Ps 119:10)

Paul taught us the essential ingredient to unity which is the word of God. He wrote, “Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no division among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.” (1Co 1:10)

Therefore, it is through careful study of the word of God that we can understand what the will of the Lord is. When we lay aside our preconceived ideas and look at the Scriptures in their context, we will know the truth of God’s word. His truth will set us free (John 8:31-32).

May we have that burning desire to return to the authority of God’s word. May we continually seek the “old paths where the good way is”. (Jer. 6:16) When we do, we will not be guessing at how to please God, but we will be certain for we are building upon the standard.

God Bless each of you,
