Several years
ago, I came across a sermon titled, “If I had but one sermon left to preach”.
Unfortunately, it was just a title without any content. So, the content of the
sermon was left to the imagination. As I thought about the sermon title, I
wondered what kind of sermon should be preached if there was only one left.
I thought about
Moses and his farewell address to the people of Israel. I also considered
Joshua and his farewell address. Both men used different expressions but had a
similar theme. Their message was faithfulness to God.
This is also
reminiscent of the words of Paul who wrote, “For this reason we also, since
the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be
filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual
understanding; that you may walk worthy of the Lord, full pleasing Him, being
fruitful for every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God”
(Colossians 1:9-10)
One of
resounding themes of the bible is the plea for Christians to be faithful unto
God. The question we seek to answer is, “What strategies should we utilize to
increase our faithfulness unto our God?”
First, we
should be committed to God from our heart. Jesus identified the greatest
commandment by saying, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,
with all your soul, and with all your mind.” (Matthew 22:37)
When we love
our God from the sincerity of our hearts, then we will not be persuaded to
rebel against Him or against the commandments He has given. We will not be
drawn away back into the sinful indulgences of the flesh because we know not
only of its destructive power, but also of the great links God went through to
save us from our sins (Romans 5:6-8).
Second, we
should be committed to the reading and studying of the word of God on a consistent
basis. The Lord has said, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…”
Hosea 4:6a). We, therefore, must continually take in a healthy diet of God’s
holy word.
Peter stated, “…as
newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, if
indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.” (1 Peter 2:2-3). The Hebrew
writer also confirmed, “But solid food belongs to those who are of full age,
that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both
good and evil.” (Hebrews 5:14)
Faithful living
before God is the only way to please Him and to secure our eternal future. We
know that the Lord will return someday to claim those who are His. Let us,
therefore, remain faithful unto God throughout our Christian walk that heaven
may indeed be ours some sweet day.
God Bless each
of you,
Eric Hicks
