The chief priest and the Pharisees sent officers to arrest Jesus. However, they returned emptyhanded. When they were questioned as to why they did not bring Jesus to them they answered, “No man ever spoke like this Man!” (John 7:46)
It is interesting to note that Jesus
did not intimidate these officers with power and might as some would suspect.
Rather, Jesus made these officers think twice before arresting Him by the way
He spoke! John describes the way Jesus spoke by writing, “He had in His right
hand seven stars, out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword…” Rev. 1:16.
This indicates that the words of
Jesus are strong, powerful, and penetrating. The Hebrew writer concurs with
John. He wrote, “For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than
any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of
joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intent of the heart.”
(Heb. 4:12)
Today, when we listen to the words of
Jesus, we find that His words penetrate deep into our soul. His words first
convict men of sin. For example, Jesus discusses the sin of unbelief. He
stated, “Therefore, I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do
not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.” (John 8:24).
When we examine the evidence
contained within the Scriptures, we find all the proof we need that Jesus is
the Son of Almighty God. We observe this in prophecy about the Messiah.
Likewise, when we compare prophecy to all that Jesus fulfilled in His lifetime,
we have no room to doubt His identity.
Second, His words warn us of eternal
condemnation. In fact, Jesus often spoke about the eternal fire of hell. He did
so to steer us far from it. He stated, “Then He will also say to those on the
left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for
the devil and his angels” (Matthew 25:41).
Last, His words are life. It is only
the words of Jesus that leads us to please the Father and obtain life
everlasting. Peter proclaimed, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words
of eternal life. Also, we have come to believe and know that You are the
Christ, the Son of the living God.” (John 6:68-69).
Concerning the words of Jesus Paul
admonished that we should allow His words to dwell in us richly (Colossians
3:16). No other words can convict us, warn us, and breathe life into us quite
like the words of Jesus. Truly the officers were correct in saying, “No one
ever spoke like this Man!”
